🌟 Be Bright, Be Seen – A Community Message from the Droitwich Cycling, Walking & Wheeling Team 🌟

We’ve been reading through the comments on the recent Droitwich Police post about visibility. Many people raised concerns about cyclists without lights, reflectors or hi‑vis clothing. We’d like to respond in a way that supports education, safety and kindness within our community, while also sharing clear, accurate information.

This isn’t about blame. It’s about keeping everyone safe, whether you are walking, wheeling, cycling or driving through Droitwich.

🚨 What the UK Law Says (Highway Code Rule 60 & RVLR)

Under Highway Code Rule 60, cycles ridden between sunset and sunrise MUST have:

  • A white front light, lit
  • A red rear light, lit
  • A red rear reflector fitted
  • Amber pedal reflectors, if the bike was manufactured after 1 October 1985

These requirements come from the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations (RVLR). Flashing lights are permitted, but steady beams are recommended where there is little or no street lighting. [highwaycode.org.uk]

💡 Why Visibility Matters So Much

Good visibility benefits everyone:

  • Drivers have more time to react
  • People crossing roads feel more confident
  • Shared use paths become safer
  • Cyclists are less likely to be involved in near‑misses
  • Dark, wet or foggy conditions become less risky

Lights, reflectors and reflective gear dramatically improve safety for all road users.

👁️ Hi‑Vis Clothing & Reflective Gear: Why It Helps

While hi‑vis isn’t required by law, the Highway Code strongly recommends wearing light‑coloured or fluorescent clothing in daylight, and reflective clothing and accessories in the dark to increase visibility to other road users. [gov.uk]

Hi‑vis and reflective gear can help because:

✔ It increases contrast

Hi‑vis stands out against almost all backgrounds, especially in busy environments.

✔ Reflective materials shine in headlights

Reflective vests, jackets, ankle bands, rucksack covers and wheel reflectors illuminate instantly in car headlights, improving reaction times dramatically.

✔ Movement improves visibility

Reflective ankle and wrist bands “move” as you pedal or walk, making you far more noticeable at night.

✔ It benefits people walking and wheeling too

Hi‑vis isn’t just for cyclists — anyone travelling near roads in poor visibility can benefit from it.

✔ It’s affordable and widely available

Hi‑vis items often cost only a few pounds and can greatly increase safety.

BUT — and this is important — not everyone has hi‑vis, not everyone can afford it, and not everyone knows the safety recommendations. Some people can only travel with what they have available at the time.

This is why compassion matters.

💬 Understanding the Realities People Face

While the law is clear on lights and reflectors, we should remember that:

  • Lights can break or fall off without warning
  • Batteries die during long journeys
  • Young riders often aren’t aware of the rules
  • Some people rely on older or second‑hand bikes
  • The cost‑of‑living crisis affects safety purchases
  • People can get caught out unexpectedly after dark

Safety improves when we support each other instead of criticising each other.

🤝 How We Can Help as a Community

We can make Droitwich safer by:

✔ Sharing safety guidance in a friendly and supportive way
✔ Encouraging young riders and new cyclists to use lights and reflective gear
✔ Offering spare lights, reflectors or hi‑vis to those who need them
✔ Helping raise awareness of the law respectfully
✔ Supporting community‑led visibility initiatives
✔ Keeping discussions calm, factual and kind

Small actions have a big impact.
